History of Custom Gift Baskets

June 16, 2008

The idea of custom gift baskets began with women collecting items for mothers-to-be. These custom gift baskets consisted of cotton diapers to bottles, which were perfect gifts for newborns. Then it became a trend in New York City during the early 1900’s for retail stores to offer gift baskets to their customers. These custom gift baskets usually had epicurean food items like dried fruits, nuts, breads, and other assortments. Custom gift baskets were first mentioned in The New Yorker and Woman’s Home Journal. Then these custom gift baskets evolved into an art. The cost of gift baskets have increased over the years because in the 1950’s gift baskets ranged in price from $1-$25, and now cost upwards to a hundred dollars or more featuring select gourmet foods and products. Presentation is also important when giving a gift basket. From simple stick baskets to specialty baskets from such places as Longaberger, gift basket giving has exploded into other custom gift baskets and has been a huge success since its inception.
